In another extremely competitive year, we are delighted by the success of our aspiring medics! We are very pleased to announce that our students have received offers to study Medicine from an impressive collection of universities including Newcastle, Southampton, Glasgow, Liverpool, Leicester, St George’s University of London, Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, University College Cork, as well as here in Malaysia at the Royal College of Surgeons and University College Dublin, Malaysia Campus.
Widely regarded as a two-year application process, we actively support students interested in medical careers through our medical society. The weekly enrichment sessions are open to students in Years 10-13 and provide a supportive forum to discuss medical science, refine key skills and benefit students by hearing directly from professionals in the field. Coupled with specialist higher education sessions throughout the school year, we recognise the importance of making a fully informed decision about the prospect of undertaking medicine at university. Furthermore, the unique opportunity for GIS students in Year 12 to take on a month-long internship programme in different medical and healthcare fields often cements a students thinking and sets them apart from other candidates looking to apply.
In Year 13, every medical applicant is involved in a weekly support programme that benefits from the generous contributions from over thirty teachers and many of our Alumni in medical professions. Through group discussions, individual mentoring, panel interview practice and full multiple station mini interview events, our students are given many opportunities to refine their ability to articulate thinking around medical science, engage in critical thought and discussion of ethics based problems and develop the confidence needed to ensure that they showcase their best selves when called upon for interview. In the past, a number of our students have interviewed so well for medicine that they have been offered places before the interviews have finished!
In light of the restrictions and travel challenges imposed by the pandemic, we have also been continuing support for those students undertaking GAP years before university. These individuals continue to seek support with their applications, updated personal statements and references and interview practice. With the rise in popularity of postgraduate medicine entry, we are also very pleased to support alumni students as they look to move from their undergraduate courses towards a career in medicine.
Well done to the medics from the Class of 2022, and a huge thank you to the teachers and Alumni from GIS for their incredibly generous support. If you would like to know more about our sixth form provision, please contact Dr. Browning at Browning.m@gardenschool.edu.my
The GIS Alumni Relations Office would like to congratulate all the GIS Medical Applicants for successfully securing fantastic placements around the world. We also would like to thank Dr Michael Browning, Ms Liza Phillips, the Higher Education Team and all the teachers involved in the success of our students.
