“Mum was a great teacher. Clive and I could read and write at a very early age. Unfortunately I copied her nearly illegible form of script! She was a great storyteller and every evening she would come to our bedroom, sometimes dressed for a party in a smart silk dress, checked that there were no mosquitoes inside the net and then tell us stories. My favourite was “How animals are captured.” She must have invented dozens of ways that animals were netted, fell into large holes or so forth. Of course they were never killed or hurt.”

“Mum was always pointing things out to us, using everyday examples of objects and events to teach us. Anything and everything was used as a teaching aid. My Mother always had something of interest with her in a bag she carried with her. These items were pulled out at various times to help the lesson along. She was always enthusiastic when teaching and would become very animated at times in order to impart some piece of wisdom to her young charges.”
