KUALA LUMPUR, 06 SEPTEMBER 2016 – Garden International School (GIS) students has embarked on a real-life lighting project with the clothing company, Pestle & Mortar Clothing (www.pestlemortarclothing.com) under the mentorship of the multi-award winning industrial designer and GIS alumna Stephanie Ng.
Passion drives the 32-year-old Malaysian lass back to her alma mater to work with Year 11 Design & Technology (DT) students through a series of weekly workshops. She aims to give them a fun and motivating experience which opens up their mind to discover their inner creativity.
“They are excited about the project; some of which you can see it in their eyes. It’s always inspiring working with peers that have a glowing spark because you know they will go above and beyond to learn and do a good job with the execution,” said Stephanie who graduated 15 years ago and pursued her passion in DT, specialising in custom design lighting and furniture.
Today, she is the founder of Stephanie Ng Design (www.stephaniengdesign.com) from Melbourne and headquartered in Kuala Lumpur. Her collections have been widely featured on international media such as Australian House & Garden, Design Quarterly, Prestige and Habitus Living, to name a few.
Despite more than a decade, Stephanie remains a true GIS spirit.
“I feel proud to have graduated from GIS and it’s great to see how quickly the young generation has developed their skills alongside the design industry. I know for a fact that students who complete DT in GIS will be far ahead of any other design graduates in Malaysia. It is an honour to be a part of that process,” she said.
The school’s head of DT faculty Ryan Ball is as excited and happy for his students.
“In DT we constantly strive to give our students authentic learning experiences and what better way than a real client and a real brief!,” enthused Ryan.
“The GCSE students are required to design and make a fully functioning product using a range of materials and processes. This year’s lighting brief will allow students to work for an exciting client and really test their creative thinking whilst at the same time showing an understanding of properties of materials and manufacturing techniques. We look forward to some really creative outcomes with the help of Stephanie,” he said.
Stephanie hopes that at the end of the workshops, some of the students might be interested in doing some work experience with her professional team in the future and she could continue to teach them and guide them through their journey to becoming industrial designers.
Next year, Stephanie plans to kick start workshops at her Design Studio in Kuala Lumpur to encourage children to create artistic approach to design. Interested parents could sign their children up for the workshops at hello@stephaniengdesign.com.
