We are delighted to share the outstanding success of GIS alum Neel Tirathrai, Class of ’21, at the recent Tech Industry Gold Live event in Manchester. Currently pursuing (ITMB) Information Technology Management and Computer Science at Loughborough University, Neel’s leadership and collaborative efforts secured them the coveted first place in the Tech Titans Student Competition hosted by BT Group and Accenture, a testament to their innovation and dedication. Their winning project, “SenseMate,” focused on leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to address the challenges faced by individuals dealing with Alexithymia, a condition affecting the understanding of emotions. This groundbreaking solution utilises AI to analyse text and visual cues, aiming to enhance emotional awareness and communication for those navigating Alexithymia.
Neel provides a firsthand account of the enriching experience, describing the event as eye-opening. Beyond the competition, the team had the opportunity to connect with industry professionals, showcase their skills, and delve into the realm of personal branding. Neel’s journey and accomplishments stand as a source of inspiration for current and future GIS students. Neel expresses excitement for the future, anticipating more opportunities on the horizon. Join us as we delve into the details of Neel Tirathrai journey and the innovative project that clinched victory at this prestigious event.
Can you share more about the inspiration behind your project, “SenseMate,” and how you and your team identified the need for an AI-powered solution for individuals with Alexithymia?
One of my teammates has a cousin diagnosed with Alexithymia, providing us with a firsthand understanding of the challenges faced by those with this condition. Witnessing these struggles inspired us to create SenseMate, an AI-powered tool aimed at helping individuals with Alexithymia interpret emotions and improve communication.
Participating in the Tech Titans Student Competition must have been a significant experience. What were the key challenges your team faced during the competition, and how did you overcome them to secure first place?
Our team encountered challenging inquiries regarding the AI technology within our product. These questions delved into the intricate workings of our algorithms, data processing methods, and the foundational structure of our technology. To address these, we had to think on the spot and adapt using our prior knowledge of research in preparation for the event.
As a current student pursuing (ITMB) Information Technology Management and Computer Science at Loughborough University, how do you see your experiences at GIS influencing your academic and professional journey?
The foundation laid at GIS instilled in me a passion for technology and a curiosity to explore its endless possibilities. The exposure to diverse perspectives and innovative learning methodologies at GIS honed my critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which continue to be invaluable assets in my current academic pursuits.
Connectivity with industry professionals and learning about personal branding were mentioned as valuable aspects of the event. How do you think these insights will shape your future endeavours, and what advice would you give to other students aspiring to make a mark in the tech industry?
Learning about personal branding and connecting with industry professionals has reshaped my approach to future endeavours. These insights emphasised the significance of networking, continuous learning, and presenting oneself effectively in the tech industry.
What was your overall GIS experience like?
My experience at GIS was a rollercoaster of ups and downs, but in retrospect, it was these fluctuations that enriched my journey. The challenges I faced, whether academic, personal, or social, taught me resilience and the ability to navigate uncertainties. These trials often pushed me beyond my comfort zone, fostering growth and self-discovery. Moreover, the downsides offered profound lessons, helping me learn from mistakes and evolve as an individual. In hindsight, the mix of ups and downs at GIS wasn’t just a phase; it was a transformative process that sculpted my character and prepared me for the diverse experiences ahead.
What is the most important thing you learned while you were at GIS?
At GIS, I learned the vital skill of adaptability. It wasn’t just about adjusting to change but embracing it as an opportunity to learn and grow. This lesson taught me resilience and the importance of staying flexible in various situations, shaping how I approach challenges both personally and professionally.
