We, at the GIS Alumni Office, always look forward to receiving updates from our alumni. It’s a moment of joy when we hear back from our former students and here goes one which we would like to share with the rest. We’re always happy to hear that our alumni are doing great and would like to share their success stories with us.
Ms. Vanessa Low, an alumnus who’s attended GIS from 1995 to 2002, is now working as a Senior Corporate Communications Manager for Chua Chu Kang Town Council, Singapore. After completing her O-Level, she pursued her Bachelor of Arts in Media and Communications at The University of Melbourne, Australia and also completed her Masters in Business Law at Monash University Melbourne, Australia.
Briefly describe your line of work/industry or other causes/projects that you are involved in..
I work in Corporate Communications where I manage the company’s communication strategy, media relations, crisis communications, internal communications and marketing communications.
How did GIS shape who you are today?
While studying at GIS, through the encouragement of my then English teacher, Ms Muttiah, I found that I had an affinity for English. I had always enjoyed reading but through Ms Muttiah, I found a way to express myself through writing. Thereafter, I chose to study Media and Communications as a career in Communications seemed dynamic and exciting. I wasn’t wrong! My job allows me to do something different every day. I could be crafting media releases one day and putting together an event the next. In today’s world where the news is so readily available online, good Corporate Communications is essential in maintaining a company’s reputation with the public, especially during a crisis.
What good life skills did you learn from GIS?
School life can be tough as kids can sometimes be mean. Be strong, be confident and know that you will find people who accept you for who you are.
What was the best thing you took/learned from GIS?
I will be forever grateful to the teachers at GIS. I learnt so much from them (in particular Ms Muttiah, Mr Shorthose & Ms Morrison) and they helped make the lessons more interesting!
What will be your advice for current students?
Make the most of the subjects and ECAs that GIS has to offer. For example, I remember that during P.E., we were given the opportunity to play various sports like Hockey, Netball and Rugby which is not something you would get in every school. The range of subjects and ECAs that GIS offered allowed me to explore and learn what it was I really loved to do. From participating in the school musical to learning to bake cakes, my time at GIS gave me the opportunity to learn new skills all under one roof.
