We have had many Parent Alumni since the school opened in 1951, many of whom have played an important role in our school’s development. In order to help recognise their special contributions to our school, we are introducing a new spotlight series for our parent alumni – just a small gesture to recognise and thank parents for their impact on our GIS community.
We are fortunate to have been connected with Daphne Langeveld Vernooij, former member of the PTF, member of staff within the GIS Marketing team, and mother of Boaz and Wout, who both attended the school. She is currently working in Event and Project Management at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Singapore, where they relocated as a family in 2018.
Daphne, please tell us more about where you and your family are at the moment.
My family and I are currently living in Singapore, after 3.5 years in Kuala Lumpur. I have three boys, two of whom were at GIS. Both of them are now at the Dutch School in Singapore, which is very different from GIS- it only has about 400 students! They have English lessons every day, but the main language is Dutch. The move was pretty easy as we packed and then two days later, we unpacked in our new house. Singapore is a great city to live in: green, safe, organised and with unlimited activities for children!
Tell us about your time at GIS…
GIS was our garden! We lived next door in Kiara 9 residency and enjoyed it very much. Wout and Boaz loved going to school; they had amazing teachers and were always happy to be there. We have wonderful memories and really feel that GIS really gave them a great foundation, especially our eldest son who started at EYC and finished in Year 2 with the wonderful Ms Katie! His English vocabulary is better than mine! He loved every minute of it!
Share with us about your working experience at GIS’s Marketing Department
During our last year in Kuala Lumpur I got the opportunity to work at the Marcomm office- that was fantastic! My Colleagues were great teachers to me as I wasn’t really experienced in marketing but I learned so much and it was a great experience. I finished several projects and helped during events. It was a great time and I felt sorry to leave due to our move to Singapore.
Anything else that you want to share?
I’d like to convey my thanks to the Marketing and Communications team, Catherine Lambert especially for giving me the opportunity! Let’s also not forget the PTF- this team of people adds such value for everyone at GIS; it’s amazing what they do! We all had an amazing time at GIS and hope to visit soon, as Singapore is just around the corner!
We would like to thank Daphne for sharing her GIS journey with us, and wish her and family all the best in their future endeavors.
