Psychology Degree Sharing Sessions with GIS Alumni!

With so many of our students interested in studying psychology as an undergraduate, it is important that they hear from those who have recently experienced this. Our alumni are therefore invaluable in what they are able to offer to our current students as they build their understanding of different courses, as well as what the transition from KL to the cities around the world that they will study in might look like.

Teacher David Whitney

Head of Social Sciences at Garden International School

“Sharing my journey in studying Psychology as a degree with the students of PsychSoc was a rewarding experience. It’s not often that I get to share the pearls of wisdom I learned throughout my undergraduate and professional career, so it was refreshing to see students be so interested and curious about the world of Psychology. It’s incredibly exciting to see so many students embrace Psychology as a potential career field, and I wish them nothing but the best!”

Gwen Chin, Class of ‘15

Digital Director at Revilo Recruitment | Digital & Content

BA Psychology & Communications from University of Buffalo, US

“I thoroughly enjoyed getting the opportunity to speak to the PsychSoc students about my own experiences within the field of psychology. Not only did I feel excited by the enthusiasm radiating through the faces and questions that filled the room, but I also felt a renewed sense of anticipation, knowing that the future of such a blooming field is in capable and intelligent hands. Getting to speak through and reflect on my experiences, while learning more about Psychology from the perspective of an American curriculum thanks to my co-speaker, Gwen, was truly an enlightening experience. Thank you to the PsychSoc students for coming to hear us speak, and I wish you all the best throughout your endeavours in the field of psychology!”

Assistant Teacher, Garden International School – Early Years Centre

BSc in Psychology from Aston University, Birmingham UK

It was a pleasure and honour to arrange this project as a leader of the Psychology Society! I felt a great sense of achievement seeing how thrilled students were to learn about university life, especially in regards to psychology courses! It was lovely seeing and hearing our alumni share their unique experiences with our students, some of whom are planning to pursue a degree in psychology for tertiary education. I also felt that this was a great opportunity for our younger students in Years 9-11 to think about what subjects they might choose for their IGCSE and A-Levels as our Alumni had expressed similarities with their studies of social sciences at GIS to their university degrees. It is truly moving to see what students at GIS may decide to follow for their bright futures and how this talk has positively impacted their thoughts on learning psychology in general. I think that it is very important to have Alumni participate in such events or projects as I saw first-hand how much valuable knowledge students can gain from our alumni’s experiences. Moreover, they may also offer opinions or expertise that are different from teachers here at GIS and therefore, it can give students access to a broader understanding of a certain subject or topic. I can’t wait to see more projects like this to take place in the future!
