The GIS STEM Club with Alumni!

Our students had the opportunity to join our STEM enrichment elective if they are interested in Maths, Physics, Chemistry as well as Engineering and Medical Sciences. It was an absolute pleasure to welcome three of our GIS Alumni; Shikhar Singh, Daniel Watson and Cheng Jin Li to virtually share their experiences on various university application processes and course structures, as well as insightful tips to best prepare our students for their chosen courses at university.

“I really enjoy the strong links that GIS have with their Alumni who are studying a range of subjects at top universities.  In the STEM Club current students benefited from the inside knowledge that the alumni are able to bring to the sessions.  Each engineering course at different universities can be slightly different and the GIS students got a real feel from the Alumni for the specialist elements.  Students heard about the different themes of particular engineering courses and how the alumni found their A-level choices prepared them for the university course.  The experience has really helped students see what path they could take to meet their goals in further education.”

Head of Year 7 & Science Teacher

“I enjoyed it a lot and the students demonstrated curiosity which is very important not just in engineering but in all creative endeavours – I was very happy to present a little about my own experiences as well as hopefully inspiring some prospective Mechanical Engineering students. Thanks for having me, Garden International School. “

Cheng Jin Lee, Class of ‘17

Thermal Product Engineer at Vertiv Malaysia Sdn Bhd

BE, Mechanical Engineering – University of Bath

“It was great to speak to people who are keen on getting into engineering; their enthusiasm was fantastic to see! I was happy to pass on my experiences and hopefully it can help someone make an informed decision on their future. I’d always encourage anyone considering engineering to really read around the subject and find something they are passionate about!”

Daniel Alexander Watson, Class of ‘18

Engineer at Delta Aerospace, Malaysia

Bsc in Aeronautical Engineering – University of Loughborough

“Sharing knowledge and experience is the best way to inspire those seeking to embark on a journey of their own. Whilst I was able to share my journey with the students, it was answering their questions that will hopefully allow them to pivot better when setting their goals. I talked about the importance of starting with a blank A4 sheet and populating it with at least 5 points every day, exploring and learning about what interests them and what actionable steps they are taking/will take to help them learn more about their passion/interest. I also explained how discovering what you don’t enjoy doing, helps paint a clearer picture of where next to drive your energies. I wish them all the best.”

Shikhar Singh, Class of ‘18

Graduate Engineer@Rolls Royce(Defence Aerospace) | Projects in Education & Start-ups | Robotics

Bachelor of Engineering – University of Warwick

“Alumni events are always extremely insightful as we get to learn more about the opportunities that our experience at GIS can lead to. On behalf of the STEM Club, I would like to give a huge thank you to our three amazing speakers! From mechanical to systems to aeronautical engineering, it was really interesting to learn more about careers in STEM and their applications alongside the speakers’ respective experiences studying engineering in university. Overall, the entire group found the presentations engaging and eye-opening and I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to organise this with my fellow STEM Club members.”
