Our bold and beautiful Alumna Emina Ashman from Class of 2011 has once again made us proud by another achievement of hers as she stars in the world premiere of ‘Hungry Ghosts’ by playwright Jean Tong.
Here are some of Emina’s thoughts on the play:
For starters, the play is written by a Malaysian who is currently studying in Melbourne. It’s a play that ultimately explores cultural identity and migration which in my opinion, particularly speaks to the lived experience of young adults moving from Malaysia to Australia. I think it will resonate with a lot of third-culture/international students as well, as it brings up the topic of what it means to feel like you belong and what that means to different people. I’ve never worked on a theatre production that feels this close to ‘home’ and felt the need to share it with this alumni community as it has really been an opportunity to integrate my love for theatre and performance, with the exploration of my own identity as a Malaysian of mixed-race living in Australia. Hope to see some of you there!
A few words about GIS:
Spending time in GIS encouraged me to understand, accept and celebrate cultural differences. This play is an examination of the complexity of identity and the significance of society playing a role in our ever-shaping of it. There is no doubt my A-levels in Drama, English Literature, Geography and Economics has aided me in the process of working on this many-layered play that explores topics like culture, politics and migration. It is already challenging me intellectually, psychologically and empathetically in the rehearsal room.
